Does it make sense to consider replacing the cylinder head?

Kinja'd!!!

A new 5MGE engine is less than $1000. New cylinder head is less.

These guys sell rebuilt heads.

Did you lose an engine in one of your classic Toyotas? Ouch.

Cylinder head replacement is going to be much easier and cheaper than a full engine swap.

Will you be replacing the head bolts with ARP studs? I would look into that, especially if boost is in the future.

Drain the oil and pull the pan to look for damage on the bottom end before buying a new head. I don’t know how the fuck they broke the cam bearing part, who knows what is going on underneath.

As long as it is a reputable rebuilder I’d almost be more comfortable with that than a NOS motor or head. Honestly that head looked like such a mess I’d just replace it. I get the point about a whole motor not being much more but if the short block is fine then just replace the head. It’ll be a lot less work.
